How to Stop Annoying Push Notification Popups in Safari and Chrome

There’s this feature on both Chrome and Safari where if you visit a popular site, for example, the New York Times, you’ll receive a pop-up. This pop-up will ask you whether you want to allow push notifications for this site. If you enable them, you’ll be notified every time an article is published there. It might get annoying quite fast. However, you can just click on “Deny” and the problem is solved. Almost. (Because these popovers will continue).
Apparently, every site is using them nowadays. Fortunately, there’s a way out. You’ll find it in the Settings, read on to know where exactly.

Safari

1. Open the app, press “Safari” in the menu bar, and click on “Preferences”.

2. Press the “Notifications” tab.

3. Find the “Allow websites to ask for permission to send push notifications” option and uncheck it.
This is going to prevent the popups asking you to enable Push Notifications.

4. If you find out that you’ve subscribed to the sites you’d like to disable, press the “Remove All” button.

Chrome

1. Open Chrome and push the three-dotted button in the top right corner of your screen, then select “Settings”.

2. Find and select “Show advanced settings”

3. Proceed to “Privacy”, after that choose “Content settings”

4. From there, choose the “Notifications” option. You’ll see that “Ask when a site wants to show notifications” being the default setting. To stop push notification popups, click on “Do not allow any site to show notifications”.

5. If you happen to already be subscribed to some website’s notifications, you can disable them by visiting the “Content settings” area. Press the “Manage exceptions” button, find the site you want to unsub from and remove it.
